Grayson County High School head boys basketball coach Kelly Carwile has left the school to take an assistant coach’s position at Hopkinsville High School, according to GCHS athletic director Josh Basham. Carwile previously served as an assistant at Hoptown under head coach Jim Simmons.

When the story of Carwile leaving Leitchfield broke earlier Wednesday, Basham was, at the time, inaccessible. Wednesday afternoon, though, Basham said that Carwile, who is from the western part of the state, at one time told him he “wouldn’t mind getting closer to home,” something this move accomplishes for Carwile.

Carwile spent three years on the sidelines at Grayson County, amassing a 43-44 overall record, and winning the 12th District title in his first season.

He arrived at Grayson County after leading the Pike County Central basketball program, where he coached the state’s 2011 leading scorer, Hobo McCoy. Prior to coaching at Pike County Central, Carwile was the head coach at Lyon County, where he coached former WKU star Ty Rogers, and Webster County.

He also served as an assistant coach at Kentucky high school basketball power Mason County, and tradition-rich Marshall County. Additionally, Carwile was an assistant at Graves County.

With Carwile’s resignation coming so close to the start of the school year, Principal Todd Johnston will likely immediately begin searching for a viable candidate to lead the Cougar basketball program.

This marks the second hardwood coaching resignation GCHS has experienced since mid-May, after the highly successful Daniel Pharris resigned as the Lady Cougars head coach only weeks after leading the squad to its first ever Sweet 16 appearance.

Pharris resigned to concentrate on his goal of working in administration, with Travis Johnston, the GCHS Cougars all-time leading scorer, being hired to replace Pharris.

K105 will have more information on this developing story as it becomes available.
