Tuesday morning at 5:30, the Leitchfield Fire and Police Departments responded to Subway on South Main Street on the report of an electrical fire.

Upon arriving at the scene, LPD officers saw a fire sparking from the main electrical pole on the back of the Subway building. Officers quickly put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.

Upon Leitchfield fire arriving on the scene, Chief Tim Duvall conducted an inspection of the location of the fire, as well as an upstairs “attic” area of the building to ensure the fire had not spread to another part of the structure.

During the course of Duvall’s inspection, he located an outlet with substandard, and in Duvall’s words, “illegal,” electrical work (see photo below). Duvall described the electrical work as a “short cut” that could lead to a major fire, although the “illegal” work did not contribute to Tuesday morning’s small fire.

Duvall called for Warren Rural Electric to turn off the power to the building until the substandard electrical work can be fixed, and approved by a state inspector.

LFD cleared the scene at 6:30, after the arrival of WRECC personnel and a certified electrician.
