After July 3 City Council meeting where some council members, and Mayor William Thomason, questioned the need for the Leitchfield Fire Department to add either one paid full-time person or two part-time people to its roster, last night the Leitchfield City Council approved the hiring of two-part LFD employees.

After an Executive Session, which included Fire Chief Tim Duvall and LFD Captain Roy Hack, the only two full-time employees of the department, the City Council approved Duvall hiring two-part time employees who will work no more than 20 hours per week, respectively.

Some, but not all of the duties the part-time employees will assist Duvall and Hack with include:

  • Daily Vehicle checks of 13 vehicles
  • Daily equipment checks.
  • Maintain that all safety equipment is in place on all runs.
  • Keep both fire stations and the training center clean.
  • Maintenance for all three facilities.
  • Station 1 (Brandenburg Rd.) and training center lawn care.
  • Annual pump tests for pumpers and tankers.
  • Annual ladder tests.
  • Perform all 1.5 inch, three-inch and five-inch hose tests (these tests ensure the utmost safety of the LFD members and allows LFD to maintain its Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating).
  • Yearly LFD hydrant testing on 476 fire hydrants.
  • If LFD battles a structure fire, there is a comprehensive list of things to complete when firefighters return to the fire station – if the fire is in the middle of the night, the work is completed the next day, including but not limited to hoses being washed, air tanks refilled, trucks and equipment cleaned, and coolers restocked.

These duties are, of course, in addition to responding to wrecks and fires, both inside the city of Leitchfield and well outside the city limits.

The money for the two part-time employees was placed in the 2017-2018 city budget earlier this year.
