Saturday morning at 4:25, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Caneyville Fire Department and EMS responded to the 800 block of Pine Knob Road on the report of an unresponsive male lying in the road.

Upon arriving at the scene, Deputy Rance Whobrey found 35-year-old James Winburn, of Leitchfield, on the ground on the side of the roadway in a fetal position. As Whobrey and Caneyville fire personnel were trying to assist Winburn, he began fighting Whobrey, punching him in the mid-section, and kicking a Caneyville firefighter.

Whobrey and Winburn fought for nearly two minutes before the deputy and Caneyville firefighters were able to bring the exceedingly violent Winburn under control. Whobrey said that EMS personnel arrived on the scene and also aided in detaining Winburn.

Whobrey informed Grayson County Central Dispatch at 4:50 about his “use of force” in detaining Winburn.

Winburn was arrested and charged with two counts of assault, possession of a controlled substance (meth), possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified), menacing, and resisting arrest. He was transported by Whobrey to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center for evaluation and medical clearance.

He’s since been lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

The Leitchfield Police Department assisted at the scene.
