The Leitchfield City Council met in a special called meeting on Monday night to discuss creating a Parks and Recreation Director position for the city.

In a unanimous 5-0 vote (Councilman Harold Miller was absent), council members agreed to create the position which will have “administrative and management responsibilities for all city parks and recreational activities held on city property,” according to the preliminary job description provided by Leitchfield Tourism Director Ilsa Johnson.

The job description says that the director will oversee all functions of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, including supervision of all department employees to “ensure that properties and facilities are appropriately developed, operated and maintained.”

Leitchfield city government and Leitchfield Tourism will share the cost of paying the director’s salary and benefits — at Monday night’s meeting, the City Council voted to amend the city’s budget to allow the city to provide $24,000 of the $48,000 salary and benefits package the director will receive.

Johnson noted that the director will receive a salary of “around $30,000.”

The Leitchfield Tourism Commission will now vote to also approve (or disapprove) the position and the $24,000 expenditure. Upon the commission’s expected approval, the city will accept applications for the position until Nov. 17.
