At Monday night’s Leitchfield City Council meeting, three members of Grayson County Girl Scout Troop 631 requested approval from council members to plant a butterfly garden, which will help the troop attain a Bronze Award.

Represented by Derann Lasley, Keira Logsdon and Melanie Fleener, the Girl Scout Troop explained that the Bronze Award is given to a troop that affects a “group effort at changing the world.”

Troop 631 will provide all of the elements needed to make a butterfly garden (seeds, tools “and the girl power to plant the flowers”), but Derann, Keira and Melanie asked the council for guidance on where to best plant the garden.

Council members and Mayor William Thomason offered several possible locations, and the Girl Scouts and scout leaders will now research those areas before returning the council for final approval.

Contract between city and Leitchfield Utilities?

Council member Harold Miller, clearly frustrated but even-tempered, suggested to his fellow council members that the body consider submitting a contract to Leitchfield Utilities regarding the timely fixing of utility cuts.

Miller has previously recommended enhanced communication between the City Council and Leitchfield Utilities Commission on the activities of the Utility, and at least one joint work session to that end has been undertaken. But Miller remains concerned that utility cuts in Leitchfield roadways are not being fixed quick enough.

“Obviously, talking, begging and discussing is not going to work with that group,” Miller said. “We need something legally binding” to ensure the necessary work is done in a timely manner.

While no council member spoke against Miller’s proposal, no vote on the matter was taken.
