With the October 17 passing of Magistrate Bill Skaggs, Gov. Matt Bevin has appointed a Leitchfield woman to the vacant 3rd District Magistrate’s seat.

Gov. Bevin, in a Wednesday announcement, named former Leitchfield City Council member Brenda Huffman to fill the remainder of Skaggs’ term, which will end on Dec. 31, 2018. Her appointment takes effect immediately.

“I am very thankful to Governor Bevin for extending me the opportunity to serve out the remainder of Mr. Skaggs’ unexpired term, a personal friend and longtime public servant,” Huffman said about the appointment. “Specifically, it was my expressed commitment to Governor Bevin that I wished only to serve the citizens of Grayson County in an interim capacity, and have no intention of seeking permanent election.”

Huffman’s experience includes a 14 year stint as Leitchfield City Council member (1994-2008), and 30 years as a legal secretary. Now retired, Huffman and her husband, Silas, work the family’s farm.

Huffman’s first Fiscal Court meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 4:00.
