Tuesday night at 9:00, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and Clarkson Fire Department responded to the intersection of East Main Street and Spring Street, in Clarkson, on the report of a utility pole lying across the roadway.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found that a semi-truck, with a 54-foot rollback trailer, had struck the guide wire leading to a utility pole. The truck’s driver, William Brawning, of Clarkson, was pulling into a large lot next to JC’s Cigarette Outlet when the rear portion of the trailer, and one of the rear tires, struck the guide wire casing, partially uprooting the casing and snapping the pole in half.

The pole fell across the roadway, but the poles cables were still connected to a utility pole on the opposite side of the street.

Windstream Cable and Kentucky Utilities arrived on scene and evaluated what cables were affected. The downed poles cables were then cut, which allowed the cable to be moved out of the road.

Brawning, who had just returned from a run to Chicago, said he wasn’t accustomed to pulling such a long trailer, and didn’t turn wide enough to avoid the guide wire. He also noted that, as it happened, he had no idea the truck was taking the pole down.

Clarkson fire personnel were on the scene only moments after the accident and provided traffic control, as East Main Street was closed between North Patterson Street and Millerstown Street until 10:00.

There were no injuries reported and electrical service was not interrupted.
