Congressman Brett Guthrie filed his candidacy papers Monday to seek re-election.

The GOP lawmaker is seeking a sixth term in Washington, representing Kentucky’s second district, which consists of 21 counties in central and south central Kentucky, including Grayson County.

He served in the Kentucky Senate from 1999 to 2008 before his successful congressional bid.

Guthrie is an assistant whip for the House Republican Conference. He also serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee as vice-chair for the Subcommittee on Health, and as chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee’s Higher Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee.

“Kentuckians send us to Washington to fight for solutions, and that’s what I’m doing every day,” Guthrie said. “I look forward campaigning vigorously across the second district on a positive platform of reforming our tax code to make it flatter, fairer, and simpler for individuals and small businesses. We have a new pro-job, pro-growth attitude in Washington and I’m all in pushing that agenda as far as we can take it.”

Guthrie’s Sept. 30 campaign finance filing showed more than $2 million on hand for his re-election effort.

While he has no Republican challengers for the May primary thus far, two Democrats are seeking their party’s nomination, and the right to take on Guthrie in the fall.

Brian Pedigo of Glasgow and Grant Short of Owensboro both filed their candidacy papers with the Kentucky Secretary of State’s office last week.
