Since the KHSAA basketball redistricting in 2005, the Grayson County Lady Cougars have won every district title since then, 13 in a row. Those district wins have most often come against the Edmonson County LadyCats, but that dynamic could be changing.

Behind the senior leadership of forward Caitlin Simon and point guard Peyton Martin the LadyCats broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and went on to defeat Grayson County 38-29 last Friday evening in the Cougar Den.

The Lady Cougars opened the game by scoring the first seven points and led 8-3 at the start of the second period, but Simon began heating things up. She scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the period and Edmonson County grabbed a two-point lead, 17-15 at the half.

The score was tied three times in the third period, the last time coming at the end of the period at 23-23.

Simon opened the fourth quarter with a put-back basket, and when Martin followed that up with a three-pointer, the LadyCats had opened up a five-point lead, 28-23 at the 6:55 mark and they would never be headed afterward.

Hannah Saltsman hit 1-of-2 at the line at the 5:47 mark to pull the Lady Cougars to within two points of the lead, 28-26, but Edmonson County closed out the game by outscoring the Lady Cougars 10-3 to win going away. Martin joined Simon in double figures with 14 points, including a pair of shots from behind the arc.

Saltsman led the Lady Cougars with 11 points and she added three rebounds. Brandi Minton and Laura Vincent both scored six points and Vincent led the team on the glass with seven rebounds.

Kenzie Renfrow scored four points, grabbed six boards and dealt two assists. Bailey Snyder completed the Lady Cougar scoring with two points.

Edmonson County’s JV squad also won their game, 37-20. Rachel Snyder led the Lady Cougars with 10 points.
