GOP State Rep. Dan Johnson, of Bullitt County, embroiled in controversy after being accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl four years ago, has committed suicide.

In a Facebook post which has since been removed, Johnson said he “couldn’t handle it any longer,” according to multiple media reports.

Bullitt County Coroner David Billings said Johnson was found with a single gunshot wound to the head at Greenwell Ford Road, in Mount Washington.

Johnson’s run for Kentucky’s 49th District seat was filled with controversy after he compared then-President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama to monkeys, placing the Obama’s faces on the bodies of apes in a Facebook post.

He also posted derogatory statements about Muslims on his Facebook page and had been questioned regarding two arson cases.
