Last week, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety honored more than 200 law enforcement officers from 185 agencies across the Commonwealth for their efforts in targeting impaired drivers.

One of those honored with the 2017 Governor’s Impaired Driving Enforcement Award was Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dylan Bohn. Bohn won the award after arresting more impaired drivers than any other deputy in the sheriff’s office.

Bohn, a Grayson County native, said one of the reason’s removing impaired motorists from the roadway is so important to him is the proactive nature of a DUI arrest; something that is unique, in many ways, in the law enforcement experience.

“It’s important because I feel it’s one of the few times that we as police have the opportunity to actually prevent a crime,” Bohn said. “The crime of DUI has already been committed, but if we stop (and arrest the driver) we prevent a potential murder.”

Bohn, whose law enforcement mentors include Clarkson Police Chief Buck Meredith and Kentucky State Police Detective Charlie Miller, compares driving impaired to steering a killing machine.

“An impaired driver turns a can into a two-ton unguided missile,” Bohn said. “The amount of destruction to both life and property as a result of impaired driving (and the) related collisions is something that really bothers me as a person.”

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, Kentucky State Police and local law enforcement agencies are partnering for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over holiday enforcement campaign, which began last week and runs through January 1.
