A 7-0 Grayson County run near the start of the fourth quarter gave the Cougars the lead, and they managed to hold off visiting Edmonson County the rest of the way to earn a one-point, 40-39 win over the Wildcats Saturday night in the Cougar Den.

This was a close, back-and-forth affair all evening. The lead changed hands twice in a low-scoring first period before the Wildcats took a 7-5 lead at the end of the period.

The score was tied three times in the second quarter and ended with the two teams knotted at 14-14. The lead changed hands five times in the third period before the Cougars put together a 6-0 run to put them on top 24-21 at the 4:22 mark. Grayson County trailed by a point, 29-28 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Dalton Decker’s three-pointer opening the final period put Edmonson on top by four, 32-28, but the Cougars answered with seven straight points to lead by three, 35-32 with 5:48 left to play.

Decker scored again with 4:16 remaining to tie the score one last time, 35-35.

Logan Majors hit two free throws with 3:43 left to put the Cougars in front to stay before Bailey Logsdon scored on a put-back basket with 1:30 remaining to make it 39-35.

The teams then traded free throws before Decker beat the final buzzer with his fourth three-pointer of the evening to make it a one-point loss. Decker was the only player to reach double figures as he finished with 14 points.

Logsdon led the Cougars with nine points and he also led the team on the boards with eight rebounds. Majors finished with eight points and he added five boards. Three players, Caleb Ray, Josh Embry and Nolan Shartzer all scored seven points, while Cameron Wells had two to complete the scoring.

In the opener, the Wildcat JV squad scored the game’s first seven points and never trailed as they manhandled the young Cougars 44-14. Decker led all scorers in that game with 16 points. Hunter Saltsman had four to lead the Cougars.
