It seemed as though the harsh, winter chill outside the gym must have somehow crept inside and settled over the entire Grayson County Lady Cougar team as they prepared to face the outstanding Edmonson County LadyCats last Friday evening in Brownsville.

Nothing seemed to work for the Lady Cougars (12-12) as shot after shot misfired and they fell further and further behind on their way to a humiliating, 51-28 loss to the LadyCats (21-4).

Grayson County shot a frigid 25 percent in the first quarter on 4-of-16 shooting from the field. They shot even worse in the second period, 1-of-9 for a polar 11 percent. Combined in the first half, they hit just 5-of-25 from the field for 20 percent. They scored just nine first-half points and trailed by 18 points, 27-9.

The shooting picked up enough in the second half so they finished the night with 26 percent shooting, 9-of-34, but that allowed the LadyCats to run away with the game. At the 7:06 mark of the fourth quarter, Edmonson County had built a 30-point lead, 46-16, and the rowdy students in Wildcat Alley, down at the end of the gym, began chanting, “Start the bu-us.”

As opposed to the Lady Cougars, Edmonson’s all-everything senior, Caitlin Simon, seemed unable to miss as she put up short jumpers and twisting shots at the hoop that somehow found their way into the nets. Simon finished with a game-high 27 points.

The LadyCats other senior leader, point-guard Peyton Martin, scored just 10 points, but she led the offense on the floor with efficiency, and, as always, made her teammates better.

As for the Lady Cougars, senior Hannah Saltsman battled bravely, leading her team with 14 points, but she just didn’t get much help from the rest of the team. Freshman Ella Robinson came off the bench to contribute meaningful minutes and finished with six points.

Sophomore Bailey Snyder scored five points and sophomore Kenzie Renfrow added three to complete the Lady Cougar scoring.
