In a perfect ending to an up and down season for the Lady Cougars, all three seniors scored in double figures on Senior Night as they blasted the visiting Hancock County Lady Hornets 68-29 last Friday in the Cougar Den.

Hannah Saltsman led all scorers with 15 points, Brandi Minton scored 13, and Mackenzie Edwards had 12.

Sophomore point guard Kenzie Renfrow had one her best all-around games of the year as she also scored in double figures. She matched Minton with 13 points, 11 of which came in the second half. In addition, the Whirling Dervish led the team with seven rebounds, five assists and six steals. She seemingly was everywhere and the Lady Hornets must have had nightmares.

Grayson County never trailed after opening the game on a 16-2 run. After that initial outburst, their intensity level sagged a bit and the Lady Hornets took advantage to score the final eight points of the first quarter and trailed by seven, 19-12. When Hancock’s Halley Stewart hit a shot just inside the arc to start the second period, Hancock had gotten back into the game with 10 unanswered points and trailed by just five, 19-14.

But the Lady Cougars had had enough and began getting their mojo back by scoring nine straight to push the lead up to 14 points, 28-14 with 4:26 left in the half. They led by 13 points, 33-20 at the break.

The Lady Cougar defense really got nasty at that point, holding the visitors to just three points in the third quarter. A 19-2 run pushed the lead to 30 points, 52-22 with 40 seconds left in the period.

Minton went to the line for bonus free throws with 5:07 left in the fourth quarter and her first made free throw gave the Lady Cougars a 35-point lead, which meant the clock would run continuously the rest of the way.

Sophomore Laura Vincent scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds. Freshman Ella Robinson continued her solid contributions off the bench with six points. Bailey Snyder had two points to round out the scoring.

The Lady Cougars (15-13) will begin the postseason this evening when they take on the host team, the Whitesville Lady Raiders (13-12). That game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
