Police are investigating after an 11-year-old boy accidentally shot his six-year-old sister.

Kentucky State Police say the shooting occurred at approximately 8:30 Wednesday night at a home in the Blackmont community of Bell County.

Police said the boy was playing with a handgun when the accident happened. After shooting his sister, the boy went next door to his grandparent’s house and called for help.

The girl was transported to a local hospital before being airlifted to University of Tennessee Medical Center. Media reports say the girl was alert and talking.

Police say the children’s parents were not home at the time of the shooting. The boy found the gun in his parent’s bedroom. The gun was not secured, and Troopers said there was more than one gun easily accessible in the bedroom.

No charges against the parents been filed.
