At Tuesday afternoon’s special called Grayson County Fiscal Court meeting, Magistrates met in Executive Session before emerging and approving a raise for Grayson County Coroner Joe Brad Hudson.

Hudson, who was paid $10,750 per year, has been coroner since 2009 when his office made about 40 coroner runs. Since then, the number of coroner runs the Grayson County Coroner’s Office makes has risen yearly; last year north of 150 runs were made, a 371 percent increase in coroner runs in nine years.

Hudson’s salary will increase to $21,124 per year, with $5,374 of the $10,374 raise coming from retiring Deputy Coroner Howard Tomes’ salary. The remaining $5,000 will come from the county.

While the raise shows a commitment by Fiscal Court to attempt to fairly compensate Hudson, his new salary remains roughly half of what the average county coroner in Kentucky earns per year.

It was noted by Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson that the court had to delay giving Hudson a raise because elected officials may only be granted raises in election years.
