Tuesday afternoon at approximately 1:45, Kentucky State Police was requested by the Simpson County Detention Center to help locate an escaped inmate who fled from a work detail.

The inmate, 50-year old Robert Keith Steelman, of Louisville, had gained access to a passenger car and left the property located on Black Jack Road in Simpson County.

At approximately 2:05, Kentucky State Police observed the vehicle Steelman stole near the 22 mile marker of I-65 and conducted a traffic stop. He was taken into custody without incident, according to police.

In addition to Steelman’s possession of a forged instrument charge for which he was incarcerated in late March, he was charged with escape and theft by unlawful taking (automobile).

He was lodged in the Simpson County Detention Center.
