Leitchfield City Council approves creating a Parks and Recreation assistant position, and Grounds Maintenance Supervisor

At Monday night’s Leitchfield City Council meeting, council members approved Parks and Recreation Director Greg Hudson hiring a Parks and Rec assistant, as well as a Grounds Maintenance Supervisor.

Both jobs are full-time positions and pay $12 per hour.

The purpose of the Parks and Recreation assistant position is to provide assistance to the Parks and Rec Director with the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of adaptive sports and recreation activities.

Specific duties may include the following: Facilitating recreational activities for youth and adults to include baseball/softball, sports festivals and other Parks and Recreation sponsored events or activities.

Some of the essential functions of the position will be:

  • To assist in planning, organizing and supervising a diverse offering of cost effective recreation programs that meet the needs of the community
  • Market and promote recreation programs, and work with the Parks and Rec Director to design and create seasonal program brochures
  • Assist in the coordination of department programs, events and activities with other departments, as well as outside agencies
  • Assist with assessments of recreational equipment, materials and supplies, and determine appropriate types of programs to offer for various populations and age groups
  • Assist in the development of an annual budget
  • Maintain records and provide reports as needed

Minimum qualifications for the position are: a high school diploma; must possess or be able to obtain a valid Kentucky driver’s license; and must be able to obtain CPR/First Aid certification.

Grounds Maintenance Supervisor

The purpose of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor position is to supervise and perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in maintenance and operation of park and recreation buildings, grounds, open spaces, and park properties. The position requires evening, weekend and holiday hours in addition to the regular work week.

Some of the essential functions of the position will be:

  • To work under the direct supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director and in conformance with applicable state, county and city laws, rules and regulations

The position will also supervise and assist seasonal workers in the following areas:

  • Mowing and maintaining park and open space areas such as baseball and softball fields, remove weeds, maintain the disc golf course, and other such areas of park property
  • Drag and prepare fields for play
  • Inspect, wash and perform routine maintenance of drinking fountains and restrooms
  • Perform minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and unskilled and semi-skilled trade work
  • Perform routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment
  • Maintain and adjust field care equipment, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems

Minimum qualifications for the job area  high school diploma (or GED), two years experience in lawn care, or athletic grounds keeping are highly desired, and must possess or be able to obtain a valid Kentucky driver’s license.

Hudson is currently accepting applications for both positions. Applications may be picked up at Leitchfield City Hall.

The City Council’s vote to approve the positions is contingent on the Tourism Commission also voting to approve the creation of the jobs.
