Grayson County’s softball team left no doubt about its intentions to sweep the 12th District Tournament on Wednesday as they defeated the Edmonson County LadyCats 11-1 in five innings to advance to the championship round Thursday evening.

They will face the Butler County Lady Bears, 7-2 winners over Whitesville Trinity in the second game, in Thursday’s final, which will start at 6 p.m. in Brownsville.

The Cougars ripped 14 hits in their five innings of work making a winner of Embry Thorpe, who allowed just the single run on four hits while striking out six.

The Lady Bears came early to watch the first game and were vociferously pulling for the LadyCats to pull the upset, but the Cougars were having none of that. They scored three times in the first inning, then sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth to score six more runs.

Leading 9-1 in the seventh, the Cougars scored twice more to end the game by the mercy rule. Lindsay O’Neal’s double to the fence in center-field drove in the deciding run.

Sophomore catcher Bailey Snyder did major damage for the Cougars, going 4-for-4, including a pair of doubles, driving in three runs and scoring three times.

Shortstop Mikayla Clark had three hits on the day, drove in one and scored twice. O’Neal had a pair of hits and drove in two, while designated player Jenna Nash had a big two-run single in the six-run fourth. Leadoff hitter Kenzie Renfrow went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.

The only run allowed by Thorpe was an unearned run in the second inning. Callie Webb reached on an error, then scored one-out later on a ringing double to right-center by Karissa Waldrop.
