Teachers across Kentucky left their classrooms this spring to protest public pension reform in Frankfort, and now those same teachers are winning political races in an effort to change Frankfort.

Their most disruptive act yet came Tuesday night where a Rockcastle High School math teacher, who had never run for public office, defeated the state House Majority Leader in a GOP primary.

Also, Tom Williamson, a former Grayson County High School social studies teacher, defeated Elizabethtown School Board member Matt Wyatt for the Democratic nomination in House District 25. In November, Williamson will compete against GOP incumbent Jim DuPlessis.

The many upset victories for educators in Tuesday’s Primary Election could point to a chaotic November General Election where at least 34 current or former teachers — two-thirds of them Democrats — will be on the ballot, according to media reports.
