Two Grayson County teachers arrested earlier this year on child sex charges have been indicted by the Grayson County Grand Jury.

Former Grayson County Middle School teacher John Cariel, 66, of Leitchfield, was indicted for first-degree sexual abuse (the child was 13-years-old when the abuse began, according to the indictment), second-degree sodomy, prohibited use of electronic communication system to procure a minor for sexual offense, and distribution of obscene matter to minors.

According to Cariel’s arrest report, School Resource Officer Ian Renfrow received a report “concerning a sexual encounter between (John Cariel) and a juvenile under the age of 14. Through investigation it was found that (Cariel) was employed at Grayson County Middle School as a sixth grade teacher and the victim was known to be a student at the same school at the time of the offense. It was found that (Cariel) made initial contact with the victim via social media like application using his cellular device.”

The report continues, “It was found that the offender sent photographs of his exposed genitalia to the juvenile victim via this application. It was further found that a physical sexual act was performed in the parking lot of Major’s Trucking in Caneyville … around October of 2017. The offender exposed his genitalia to the victim, then allowed the juvenile victim to perform oral sex on him. After oral sex was performed, the juvenile was exposed to the offender as the offender knowingly masturbated in the presence of the juvenile victim.”

The 65-year-old Cariel, after being read and waiving his Miranda right, “admitted to each of the above allegations,” according to Officer Renfrow’s report.

Cariel, who was arrested on May 15, remains lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond.

Former Grayson County High School teacher Jonathan Jones, 27, of Leitchfield, was indicted on one count of third-degree sodomy.

Jones’ arrest citations says in part, “ … (the) defendant unlawfully committed the offense of sodomy  in the third-degree, when as a person in position of authority, he engaged in deviate sexual intercourse with a female under the age of 18, with whom he comes into contact as a result of that position. The offender engaged in oral sexual intercourse with the 17-year-old victim, who is enrolled as a student in Grayson County High School, where the offender is employed.”

The citation says the offense took place on March 8, 2018, at Jones’ residence. He was arrested on March 12, and is currently free on a $10,000 bond.
