Earlier this week, the Cave City Police Department responded to a possible impaired driver who nearly hit several people as the suspect was leaving the El Mazatlan restaurant on Gardner Lane.

Upon arriving in the area, police noticed the vehicle driving erratically on Old Bardstown Road. Police executed a traffic stop and found that the driver was 53-year-old Robert S. Smith, the City Manager of Cave City, according to media reports.

Smith is also the city’s code enforcement officer and heads the city’s public works department. He was recently appointed to serve as chairman of the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission’s board of directors.

When Cave City police realized Smith was the driver, officers requested Kentucky State Police to assist with the stop. Police said Smith admitted he had been drinking at the restaurant. Troopers performed a field sobriety test on Smith. He refused to take a field breathalyzer test.

Smith was arrested and charged with DUI, failure of owner to maintain required insurance, failure to produce an insurance card, operating a vehicle with an expired driver’s license. He was transported to the Barren County Detention Center but has since been released.
