The Elizabethtown Police Department is asking motorists to not give money to panhandlers.

Elizabethtown Police Department said the agency has partnered with the United Way of Central Kentucky to put up signs discouraging people from giving to panhandlers.

There is also a website, etowncares.com , where people can retrieve information on better ways to give to charity.

Police said the initiative stems from complaints about panhandlers, which, according to authorities, is on the increase.

The department plans to put up six signs around the city over the next few weeks.
