At Monday night’s Leitchfield City Council meeting, council members approved Leitchfield Fire Department Chief Tim Duvall hiring a full-time staff member.

Duvall recommended LFD member Andrew Whobrey fill the position, a move the council also approved. Whobrey has been with LFD as a volunteer since 2013.

Duvall said with two fire stations and a training center that need upkeep, 14 fire trucks that require maintaining, plus mowing responsibilities, the need for a third full-time person is, in his mind, indisputable. In addition to existing full-time staff Duvall and Capt. Roy Hack, LFD had one part-time employee, but with the hiring of Whobrey that position is no longer viable, according to Duvall.

Miller and Mudd honored

Council member Harold Miller and Kevin Mudd were awarded Keys to the City for their efforts in helping organize the annual Twin Lakes National Fiddler Championship held in Leitchfield each of the last seven years (Mudd also expertly emcees the event).

The proclamation awarding each a Key to the City reads in part:

Both Mudd and Miller have “been instrumental in helping make fiddling a prominent pastime in Leitchfield and Grayson County.” Mudd was further recognized for emceeing the event, as well as the Kentucky State Championship, with Miller lauded for the “countless hours” he has dedicated to the event to “ensure it is a success, year after year.”

Touch-A-Truck

Jayme Pharis is organizing a Touch-A-Truck event for children of all ages to be held at the Grayson County Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 2, from 10:00 until 2:00.

Pharis requested first responder vehicles, including fire trucks and police cruisers be made available for the event. Council member Harold Miller (a supervisor with Warren RECC) will supply a Warren RECC vehicle.

Additionally, an ambulance, snow plow and semi-truck, among others, will be made available for children to investigate and learn about.

The event is free.

Alcohol sales on election day?

Twin Lakes Liquors owner James Conder submitted a letter to the council requesting that alcohol sales be allowed all day on election day. Currently in Leitchfield, consumers are not allowed to purchase alcohol until after the polls close at 6:00 p.m.

State law stipulates that unless a local government entity approves legislation allowing liquor sales during polling hours, the sale of alcohol is prohibited on election day until after polls close.

Council members opted to table the matter until further study can be completed.

Parks and Rec update

Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Tammee Saltsman said that work continues to be done at both the softball fields at Beville Park as well as the baseball fields at the Leitchfield Sports Complex (LSC) – At Beville, the large softball field will undergo “laser leveling,” and workers will replace the grass infield on one of the baseball fields at LSC, and remove the grass infield from another field.
