Gov. Matt Bevin has announced he is running for re-election in 2019.

Bevin made the announcement Saturday night at the annual Republican Party of Kentucky Lincoln Dinner in Lexington, exclaiming, “You bet I’m running again” during a speech.

The announcement ended speculation on whether he would run after Bevin received negative feedback because of his stance and public pronouncements on teacher’s and public worker’s pension plans. A recent poll sponsored by Morning Consult’s Govvernor Approval Rankings showed Bevin with a 41 percent approval rating, one of the lowest governor approval ratings in the nation.

Bevin’s announcement, though, received enthusiastic applause from the audience of political leaders, donors and others.

Democrat Attorney General Andy Beshear, who has clashed with Bevin on a variety of topics, announced he was running for governor last month. Bevin, during his speech Saturday night, said no Kentucky Democrat is “even remotely worthy” of being governor.
