The Lady Cougar soccer team improved its season record to 5-3 with its fourth straight win, 2-0 over the visiting Lady Colonels of Christian County Tuesday evening at the Cougar Soccer Stadium.

Grayson County led 1-0 at the half on a goal by freshman Ellie Evans, then sophomore Gilliam Johnson iced the game with a second half goal.

The Lady Colonels held the edge in possession time in the first half, but it was the Lady Cougars who dented the scoreboard first. The Lady Cougars had the ball in the Colonel end of the field in the 26th minute when Evans battled a Colonel defender for the ball near the edge of the penalty area. Evans won the possession, took a short dribble, then lofted a shot at the visitors’ goal. Colonel keeper, Peyton Hale, could only watch as the ball sailed over her head and settled into the goal to give Grayson County the 1-0 lead.

Johnson had a good chance at a second goal in the 31st minute, but her rifle-shot kick from about 15 yards was stopped nicely by Hale, and the teams went into the intermission with that 1-0 score.

The Lady Colonels came out fired up in the second half, putting on great pressure in the Grayson end, looking for the equalizer, but as she was in the first half, junior goalie Laura Vincent was rock solid, stopping a variety of Christian County shots fired at her goal.

Then, in the 56th minute, the Lady Cougars gained the possession and took it into the visitor’s end. Junior midfielder Kandler Lindsey sent a beautiful, long pass across the Christian goal, to Johnson, who was camped just outside the right upright. Johnson settled the ball, dribbled twice, then sent a low, skidding shot at Hale, who went to the ground and appeared to have made the save, but somehow it got past her and dribbled into the net to make it 2-0.

That seemed to take the life out of the Lady Colonels and the Lady Cougars played defensively the rest of the way to seal the win.

The Lady Cougars will be on the road Thursday, traveling to Harned to take on the Lady Tigers  (2-3) of Breckinridge County. That game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
