George Lowery (G.L.) Hayes, age 81, of Leitchfield, KY, passed away Monday, (September 10, 2018) with his wife and daughter at his side.

G.L. was born on December 20, 1936. His parents were Edd and Sybol Logsdon Hayes. He was a brother to Johnie, Kenneth, Elizabeth, Norbet, Alice, Dewey, and James.

He was a retired teacher. He started teaching school during the 1957-58 school-years at Wortham, a one-room school. He ended his teaching career in 1955 as an agriculture teacher at Fort Madison Senior High in Fort Madison, IA., with a teaching career spanning 37 years. He was selected as Fort Madison’s Teacher of the Year in 1995.

He served as a deacon in Madison Baptist Church in Fort Madison. He was an active member of the Kiwanis service organization.

G.L. is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Jo (Morrison) Hayes, 2 children, Javonda Critchelow (Kevin) and Steven Hayes, and their children, Andrea, Julie, Lindsey, and Ryan Critchelow, and Hunter Hayes. He is blessed with 7 great-grandchildren, Claire, Mena, Barrett, Allie, Haley, Case, and Lane.

G.L. held many titles, but on October, 9, 1949 he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, and received his most precious title of a “Sinner Saved by Grace”.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, (September 12, 2018) at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield. Bro. Buddy Brooks and Bro. Mickey Coates will be officiating. Burial will be in the New Hope General Baptist Church Cemetery on Sadler Road.

Visitation will be at the Dermitt Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. Wednesday until time of services.
