A new report says the state employee who received a $215,000 raise in August has known Gov. Matt Bevin for a long time.

State Chief Information Officer Charles Grindle began working for the state on October 9, 2017.

Last week, Bevin said he had known Grindle “for some time,” and a former official with the Commonwealth Office of Technology says the two have had a lengthy friendship, dating back 30 years, as the two men spent time together at the same posts during the early years of their military careers. Bevin told reporters last week that he personally recruited Grindle for the job of managing state government’s technology needs, after Grindle retired as a Colonel at the U.S. Army War College.

Campaign finance records also showed Grindle and his wife owned a company that received payments from Bevin’s senate and gubernatorial campaigns for various services.

Grindle’s $215,000 raise makes him the highest paid state chief information officer in the country, according to media reports, as he now makes $375,000 per year.
