On a Saturday when the Cougar soccer team scored a blowout, 10-0 win over the visiting Campbellsville Eagles, junior Wyatt Schultz had a day to remember, scoring five of those goals himself.

Senior Cody Watkins also had a fine day, scoring three goals, including the one with less than seven minutes remaining that ended the game by the KHSAA “mercy” rule that ends games when a team leads by 10 points.

The Cougars got on the board just six minutes into the game when Watkins brought a ball into the middle and unleashed a laser shot at Campbellsville goalie Brennon Wheeler, who was able to turn the shot away as he sprawled on the ground. But the rebound went straight back to Watkins and he put it high into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

Four minutes later, freshman Josh Stevenson set up Schultz nicely for his first goal. Bringing the ball down the right sideline, Stevenson cut around the Eagle defender to bring the ball along the endline, toward the goal. He then sent a crossing shot that Schultz was able to one-time over Wheeler to make it 2-0.

Schultz scored again in the 20th minute to make it 3-0 on a shot that Wheeler got two hands on but could not control.

Following an Eagle foul just outside the penalty area, Watkins took the free kick and bent it around the three-man wall and put it past Wheeler to make it 4-0. Schultz then added another goal with about 10 minutes left and the Cougars took a 5-0 lead into the halftime break.

Less than a minute into the second half, Schultz beat Wheeler to a through-ball, took one touch past the keeper and put the ball into the empty net to make it 6-0.

In the 48th minute, Logan Raymer sent a ball through the Eagle defense to Matthew Haycraft, who made a nice cross to Schultz for his fifth goal of the day. Haycraft now has 19 assists on the season, which leaves him tied for first in the state in that category.

Haycraft then scored the next goal in the 50th minute on a nice assist from Watkins to make it 8-0.

In the 63rd minute, the Cougars’ Logan Raymer had an empty net to shoot at, but whiffed on the shot. Following a mad scramble in front of the Eagle net, Raymer got a second chance and put the ball in to make it 9-0.

Rain, that had been threatening all morning but had held off, started in earnest with about 10 minutes left to play. Watkins then ended the game with an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute.  Grayson County is now 7-5 for the season.
