October Fun Facts!

1. The name October has been derived from the Latin “Octo” which means eight because October was the eighth month of the year, according to the Roman calendar. It was called Winterfylleth, meaning the “fullness of winter”, by the Anglo-Saxons because it had the first full moon of the winter season.

2. Columbus Day, the second Monday of October, is a national holiday and celebrated in many countries of the Americas as the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in America in 1492.

3. Halloween, the spookiest night of the year, is celebrated in a number of countries on October 31, the eve of All Hallows’ Day. It is believed that on this day the spirits can wander the earth freely and children can hop for treats in the neighborhood in the guise of various costumes. Interestingly, in terms of expenditure, Halloween is second only to the Christmas.

3. In the U.S.A., October not only marks the onset of the festive season but is also celebrated as the National Pizza Month, Popcorn Month, Pork Month and Sausage Month.

4. October cites that the winter is hard if the deer have a grey coat in this month. The colour of the coat depends on the severity of winters. Shakespeare, the famous English poet, playwright and actor, has never mentioned October in any of his works. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer and dramatist in the English language.

5. October Is the Time for These Favorite Traditions: Pumpkin-Flavored Everything, Hayrides, Haunted Attractions, Costumes, Charlie Brown’s The Great Pumpkin, Monsters, and of course, Horror Movies.

Have a Laugh!

Q: What did the tree say to autumn?

A: Leaf me alone.

Health Tip!

Brush up on hygiene. Many people don’t know how to brush their teeth properly. Improper brushing can cause as much damage to the teeth and gums as not brushing at all. Lots of people don’t brush for long enough, don’t floss and don’t see a dentist regularly. Hold your toothbrush in the same way that would hold a pencil, and brush for at least two minutes.

DIY Falling Leaves Garland

You’ll need a bag of artificial leaves, which we bought from the
Dollar Tree, but any craft store should carry them. Next use a
paintbrush to apply Elmer’s glue to each leaf and then sprinkle glitter
over the leaf. Let the glue set and then shake off the excess glitter.
Next punch a hole at the top of each leaf and attach a ribbon that you can tie to a large ribbon strand.
These leaves are so shimmery and will add a little sparkle to your home for the upcoming months. It would also be a great project to do with kiddos, a little glitter ending up on their faces is always a good thing.
