A Leitchfield man has been cited for animal cruelty after dragging a dog behind his truck.

Saturday afternoon at approximately 5:30, Grayson County Central Dispatch was alerted that a man, later identified as Charles Weedman, dragged a one-year old pit bull behind his truck as he left Peddler’s Mall, on West White Oak Street.

Leitchfield Police Officer Chase Melton, along with Officer Missy Skaggs, who responded to the call, said Weedman drove to the railroad tracks on Hwy 54 before being stopped by witnesses. A distance of about four blocks. Weedman removed the dog from its chain and drove to his Leitchfield residence.

Officers Melton and Skaggs arrived at Weedman’s home where Weedman told the officers he forgot he had tied the dog to his bumper.

The Leitchfield Animal Shelter (LAS) took control of the dog and immediately transported the animal to a veterinarian. The dog suffered severe injuries to her stomach, legs and paws.

LAS Director Jessica Pharis Williams said the pit bull is “recovering but in a lot of pain.” She added, “All four legs were skinned badly, some all the way to the bone, and the toenails were torn out … It’s going to be a long road to recovery.”

Weedman’s court date has been scheduled for October 25.
