June Lavern Downs Cockrel, age 65, of Caneyville, passed away Sunday, (October 7, 2018) at her home.

She was born on March 26, 1953 in Leitchfield, KY, the daughter of the late James Edward and Edith Lavern Langley Downs.

She was a production line worker at Vermont American in Leitchfield for 25 years.  She enjoyed dancing, especially with her babies, talking on the phone, spoiling her grandchildren, cooking for her family, and all kinds of music, especially old-time Rock and Roll. She and Jackson Cockrel were married on September 14, 1971. She had previously served with her husband and pastor at Southside Christian Center in Caneyville. June was the “First Lady” of her present church location with her husband, Pastor Jackson Cockrel, at New Hope Church in Caneyville.

She is survived by her husband Jackson Cockrel of Caneyville; three daughters, Lori Norris (Davy) of Leitchfield, Stephanie Stevenson (Mark) of Leitchfield, and Dana Cockrel of Caneyville; five grandchildren, Megan Martin (Jason), Sarah Norris-Sotkiewicz (Michael), Taylor Washum (Tim), and Izzy and Gabby Stevenson; one great-grandchild, Vera Washum, and one great-grandchild on the way; one brother, Phil Downs (Vickie) of Leitchfield, one sister, Linda McCoy (Wayne) of Vine Grove; and four nieces and nephews also survive.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Shannon Cockrel and nephew, Troy Bratcher.

Celebration of Life Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, (October 11, 2018) at the New Hope Church in Caneyville. Bro. Jackson Cockrel and Bro. Davy Norris will be officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be at the Dermitt Funeral Home from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and at the New Hope Church from 11:00 a.m. Thursday until time of services.
