Facing the South Warren Spartans for the second time this season in the second round of the state football playoffs, the Cougars saw their extraordinary season come to an end, 55-21 at Warren Central High School last Friday evening.

The game was over almost from the start as the Spartans scored 34 points in the game’s first 4:55. Senior running back Cameron Harrison carried the ball only six times, but he accumulated 103 yards and three touchdowns. Senior quarterback Gavin Spurrier completed nine of 15 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown to junior Tomi Mustapha.

The Spartans also got a 45-yard punt return from senior wide-receiver Clayton Bush and an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by senior M. J. Boley at the start of the third period.

The Spartans led 34-0 after the first period of play, and Harrison added two more scores in the second period to make it 48-0 at the half. The clock began running continuously at the 9:41 mark of the third quarter when the Spartans were up 41-0.

When Boley took the second half kickoff for a touchdown, the Spartans led 55-0. That’s when the Cougars began making headway against the Spartans’ second teams. Following a Cougar punt, the Spartans had a first down at their own 29-yard line, but Logan Kopp stepped in front of a pass from backup quarterback Caden Veltkamp and returned it for a touchdown to get the Cougars on the board at 55-7.

Grayson County worked a successful onside kick and took over at the Spartan 45. Two plays later, Noah Bullock hit Q’Daryius McHenry with a 31-yard touchdown pass that made it 55-14.

Grayson County had the ball at their own 43-yard line to start the fourth quarter and they took more than five minutes off the clock with a nine-play, 57-yard drive for their final score of the season. Ethan Cates carried the ball in from the one to make the final score 55-21.

The Cougars finish the season with a record of 8-4.
