Sunday morning at approximately 9:30, Kentucky State Police, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Clarkson and Leitchfield Fire Departments, and EMS responded to the 118 mile marker of the westbound Western Kentucky Parkway on the report of a two-vehicle accident.

Wax Fire Chief and Grayson County EMS worker Dave Strader, who was in the area at the time of the accident, arrived on the scene within minutes and found two males trapped inside a Chevrolet Equinox. Both men suffered from critical injuries, with Strader telling Grayson County Dispatch to summon medical helicopters for both patients.

The Clarkson and Leitchfield Fire Departments soon arrived and worked for about 45 minutes to free the men from the wreckage. Both victims, whose names have not yet been released by Kentucky State Police, were then airlifted from the parkway and transported to a trauma center.

The investigation into the accident showed that the Chevy, traveling at a high rate of speed, rear-ended a semi-truck as both vehicles traveled west. There were no brake marks visible at the scene.

The Equinox traveled about 100 yards after impact.

The semi driver was uninjured in the accident.

The parkway was shut down in both directions for about 45 minutes as one of the helicopters landed in the eastbound lanes of the parkway, with the other landing in the westbound lanes.

Kentucky State Police is leading the investigation. Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Fred Norder assisted at the scene.
