Sunday afternoon at approximately 1:30, the Clarkson Police Department, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO), Leitchfield Police Department, Clarkson Fire Department, and EMS responded to a report of an unresponsive elderly female in a ditch in the 200 block of East Main Street, in Clarkson.

Upon arriving at the scene, Clarkson Police Officer Dylan Bohn and LPD Officer Eugene Cain found 94-year-old Helen Haycraft, of Clarkson, had apparently fallen and was unable to get up. Authorities performed life-saving measures on Haycraft, but to no avail.

An investigation at the scene by Bohn and GCSO Sgt. Fred Norder showed that Haycraft had been walking in the ditch-line when she fell down face first.

Grayson County Coroner Joe Brad Hudson said Haycraft had been deceased for three to four hours before being found. Hudson added that Haycraft died from “hypothermia due to exposure,” as the temperature at the time was in the low 30s.

Haycraft lived less than 200 yards from where she fell.

Hudson, Clarkson Police Chief Buck Meredith and Officer Bohn are leading the death investigation.

GCSO Deputy Kelsey Overton and Special Deputy Mark Stanton assisted at the scene.
