Several Kentucky school districts will be closed on Friday because of rampant flu-like illnesses.

School districts closed on Friday include nearby Hart County and Edmonson County, as well as Washington County, Powell County, Russellville Independent, Montgomery County, and Lexington Christian Academy.

Edmonson County High School Athletic Director Kyle Pierce tweeted that all Edmonson County High School athletic contests have been cancelled for this weekend. All weekend athletic events in the Powell County School system have also been cancelled.

Last week, three school districts, Washington and Taylor Counties as well as Campbellsville Independent, closed on Thursday and Friday due to flu-like illnesses.

Eleven days ago, the Kentucky Department for Public Health issued an alert warning about the flu, saying the illness is “widespread,” the highest alert level the state gives for the virus, as more than half of Kentucky’s regions reported increased flu cases.
