At Tuesday’s Grayson County Fiscal Court meeting, Jailer Jason Woosley announced the Grayson County Detention Center is going to purchase a body scanner.

Woosley said the scanner will be similar to body scanners used at airports and will make the jail safer for staff and inmates after a few “serious” contraband issues over the last few years.

He said the scanners, which cost between $150,000 and $180,000, are so sensitive that if an inmate has taken a pill it can detect its presence inside the person being scanned. Currently, the jail transports prisoners to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center for x-rays, if needed.

Woosley added that prisoners have hidden drugs, cellphones and other contraband in body cavities, actions that a body scanner will detect.

The money to pay for the scanner will come from the jail’s commissary account, and not the jail’s general fund or taxpayer dollars.

Transportation improvements

Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson said he recently met with state officials regarding improvements to bridges in Grayson County.

Henderson said eight county bridges have been earmarked for improvement by the state, including the bridge on Horntown Road, along with Taylor Fork bridge, among others.
