A Wilkey Elementary School student has been selected by the Grayson County Retired Teachers Association (GCRTA) as the countywide winner of the 2018-19 “Grandparent of the Year” essay contest.

Tessa Blain, a fifth grade student in Ann Decker’s homeroom, was selected as the winner of the contest and her essay will now represent Grayson County in the state finals. Tessa was honored at Thursday night’s Grayson County School Board meeting. The winner of the statewide contest will be recognized at the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association convention this spring.

Students district wide participated in the contest to answer why, “My Grandparent Should be the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year.” GCRTA members awarded certificates and cash prizes to room and school winners at each elementary school in Grayson County.

The essay competition, sponsored by AARP Kentucky and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, is a unique way to recognize the significant contributions of older Kentuckians in shaping the lives and values of youth across the Commonwealth.

Tessa is the daughter of Jim and Teresa Blain.
