Cougars drop 42-35 decision to Daviess County in summer basketball opener

Playing on the first day of the summer basketball season at Apollo High School, the Cougar varsity saw a second-half comeback fall short as they suffered a 42-35 defeat at the hands of the Daviess County Panthers.

The Cougars led twice in this game, at 3-2 and at 5-4. Chandler McCrady hit a free throw at the 11:07 mark to pull the Cougars to within a point of the lead at 7-6, when the Panthers set sail on an 11-0 run to lead 18-6 with 1:57 left in the first half. They led by 13 points, 24-11, at the half.

When the Cougars opened the second half on an 18-8 run, they had reduced their deficit to just three points, 32-29 with 9:35 left to play. They would get no closer.

The Panthers scored the next six points to up their lead to nine points, 38-29 with 5:03 left and the Cougars were never closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Sophomore Keegan Sharp led the Cougars with nine points, all of them coming on three made three-pointers. Freshman River Blanton and junior Miles Hornbeck each scored six points.

Sophomore Hunter Tomes scored four points, while three players, seniors Nolan Shartzer and Wyatt Schultz and junior Jaxon Higdon all had three points. McCrady finished with one point to conclude the Cougar scoring.

In addition to his three points, Shartzer had three rebounds, four assists and three steals.
