A Smiths Grove man has been jailed after a wreck involving a horse and buggy he was operating.

Reuben Yoder, 34, was charged Tuesday night with nine counts of wanton endangerment, criminal mischief and operating a non-motor vehicle while intoxicated after a buggy he was operating sideswiped a vehicle at the intersection of Hydro Pondsville Road and T. Elkins Road, in Smiths Grove.

The buggy was carrying Yoder’s wife and seven children, ages nine-months to 12, according to police. Yoder initially told the Smiths Grove Police Department that one of his children had been guiding the carriage, but the children told police their father was operating the vehicle as it side-swiped the vehicle.

Officers detected an odor of alcohol on Yoder and he displayed slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, police said.

Yoder was lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail.

No one was injured in the wreck.
