A family outing turned tragic over the weekend at Rough River Dam Lake State Resort Park.

Saturday afternoon at approximately 1:30, a Munfordville family was celebrating Father’s Day near the Rough River Lake Lodge when a two-year-old boy wandered away from the gathering. According to Kentucky Fish & Wildlife officials, it’s estimated that the child had been gone for about 20 minutes before his family realized he was missing.

A search ensued, with the two-year-old boy’s cousin finding the child unresponsive in the water, in the swim area of the beach (which had been closed off to swimmers because of high water and an abundance of animal feces, according to officials).

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Falls of Rough Fire Department, U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers Rangers, Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Park Rangers, and EMS.

Army Corp. Rangers performed CPR on the child before he was transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center by EMS, according to Fish & Wildlife officials. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital by Grayson County Deputy Coroner Larry Holeman.

Fish & Wildlife officials said the name of the deceased boy will not be released until the investigation into his death is complete.
