Beville Park has been re-opened after officials contained a contaminant that was found in a stream at the park.

Authorities closed the park Tuesday afternoon after the oil-like substance was discovered Tuesday morning by a jogger. While not official, the substance appears to be the tack that is applied to asphalt prior to paving.

Grayson County Emergency Management Director Tony Willen praised Leitchfield Utilities, Leitchfield Public Works, the Leitchfield Fire Department, Leitchfield city government, and county government for responding to the crisis in an expedient manner and working tirelessly to contain the contamination — The contaminant has been pumped into a temporary pond that was dug on Tuesday and expanded on Wednesday.

As previously reported, the substance was dumped in the median at the 108 mile marker of the Western Kentucky Parkway and the entered the mouth of the stream that runs through the park. The stream ends at the park’s pond.

Willen said city government re-opened the park to fisherman Wednesday morning on a catch-and-release basis.

A Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet Emergency Response Team and the Kentucky Division of Water have provided leadership and labor during the clean-up process and are working to determine the responsible party, according to officials.
