Kentucky State Police is warning citizens of a phone scam.

On Monday, Kentucky State Police was contacted by a concerned citizen about a scam phone call. Police said the citizen received a phone call from a male stating he had won $170,000 and a new vehicle. The caller then requested $300 in order to process the winnings.

After the citizen sent $300, an additional $2,500 was requested to finish the processing. In addition to the funds, the scammer requested the individual open a savings account, and that the account information be given to him.

The phone number is possibly Jamaican, police said, but authorities believe it was a generated number that does not exist.

Kentucky State Police would like to remind everyone to never give out one’s social security number or other personal information over the phone.
