Kentucky State Police is asking for help finding possible witnesses to the fatal hit-and-run that resulted in the death of an eight-year-boy in Breckinridge County.

Saturday morning at approximately 11:30, Kentucky State Police received a request from the Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Office investigating the fatal accident in the 12000 block of Hwy 259.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Scotty Sharp said a 2009 Pontiac Torrent, being driven by 35-year-old Bradley D. Mattingly, of Leitchfield, had been traveling north on Hwy 259 when the Pontiac struck an eight-year-old child who was standing on the side of the road as he retrieved mail out of a mailbox.

State police is “requesting the public’s assistance in speaking with the driver of a late model Dodge Durango (pictured above) with a Florida license plate that was driving near the accident scene, at 12798 Hwy 259 south in Breckinridge County, between 11:15-11:22 Saturday morning,” according to Kentucky State Police spokesman Scotty Sharp.

Sharp said investigators believe the driver and (any) passengers in the Durango may have witnessed Mattingly strike the child, and authorities would like to speak with them as part of the investigation.

Anyone with information on the vehicle or its occupants is asked to contact KSP Post 4 at 270-766-5078.

After fatally striking the child, Mattingly fled the scene but was quickly spotted by Trooper Brandon Brooks and Constable Mark Stanton on Lilac Road, near the Breckinridge/Grayson county line, as the officers were en route to the accident scene.

Brooks and Stanton executed a traffic stop on the vehicle and arrested Mattingly, charging him with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid.

Mattingly was lodged in the Breckinridge County Detention Center.
