Kentucky State Police arrested a Leitchfield man on drug trafficking and other charges during a traffic stop on Lahue Cemetery Road, in Short Creek.

Thursday night at approximately 11:00, Trooper Jakob Clemons conducted the stop on a 2006 Nissan Altima for failing to signal a turn from Owensboro Road onto Falls of Rough Road, and erratic driving.

Upon making contact with the driver, 34-year-old Jonathan Burden, the arrest citation states that he was “extremely nervous” and “sweating profusely.” Burden also failed to produce an insurance card.

For his safety, and in order to further investigate, Clemons escorted Burden to his cruiser, during which time Burden told the trooper that the reason he was acting nervous was because he wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Burden, who earlier told Clemons there were no weapons in the car, informed the trooper that there was indeed a gun on the floorboard and “maybe another” gun in the car, according to the citation.

Prior to placing Burden in his cruiser, Clemons patted the suspect down and located over $500 in cash and a pocket knife.

While searching the car, the citation says Clemons found a handgun on the passenger’s side floorboard along with a “large number of baggies.” The trooper located another handgun and brass knuckles in the center console.

On the passenger seat, Clemons discovered a “tool bag” containing more baggies, scales (with methamphetamine residue), a meth pipe, and a baggie containing over two grams of methamphetamine.

The citation also states that Burden admitted to smoking meth about an hour prior to being pulled over.

He was arrested and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine, enhanced due to the presence of the handguns), DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, careless driving, failure to produce an insurance card, failure to wear a seat belt, and failure to or improper signal.

Burden is lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
