A natural gas explosion in Lincoln County is responsible for the death of a Stanford woman.

The explosion occurred early Thursday morning in the Moreland community, about five miles north of Hustonville, near Hwy 127. Flames reached up to 300 feet in the air, according to officials.

Killed in the massive explosion was 58-year-old Lisa D. Derringer. Five people were injured when the explosion caused multiple fires in a nearby subdivision. Five homes were destroyed, and several others damaged. Nearly 100 people have been evacuated from the area.

The pipeline, which stretches 9,000 miles from Texas to New York City, is owned by Enbridge, a Canadian energy transportation company based in Calgary, Alberta. The company issued the following statement on the explosion:

“Enbridge is continuing to respond to the incident on the Texas Eastern natural gas pipeline system in Lincoln County. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has assumed control of the incident site. The NTSB is investigating the incident and Enbridge is supporting that investigation.

“At Enbridge, our first concern is the safety of the public and the surrounding communities. Enbridge has mobilized emergency response personnel and resources to the site, and we are continuing to work alongside first responders. We have isolated the affected line and are working closely with emergency responders to manage the situation. We will provide more information as it becomes available.”
