The DeSales Colts visited the Cougar Soccer Field on Thursday and went home with a 3-1 victory over Grayson County’s Cougars.

Through the game’s first 15 minutes of action, the two teams were locked in a defensive struggle, with nearly all of the action taking place in the midfield area.

But after that, the Colts began to dominate the action, keeping the pressure on the Cougars’ end of the field. In the 15th minute, senior goal keeper Brady Whobrey made a pair of spectacular saves to keep the Cougars even.

In the 23rd minute, the Colts were awarded a free kick following a Cougar foul, and Josh Smith stepped up to take the kick, 35 or 40 yards to the right of the Cougar goal. Smith’s shot bounced once or twice in front of the Cougar goal, through the defense and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Whobrey seemed to be screened out on the play and didn’t seem to see the ball until too late.

In the 29th minute, senior Wyatt Schultz stripped the ball from a Colt on the right sideline, and had a clear path to the goal. As the Colt goal keeper, Jared Elken, came out from his net to cut off the angle, Schultz slipped the ball past him and it slowly rolled into the goal to tie the score at 1-1. That was the score at the half.

It took less than a minute for the Colts to take the lead back. Matthew Dick gained possession of the ball near midfield and dribbled to about 30 yards out and let fly with a curving shot. Whobrey was out far enough that he couldn’t get back to defend the shot, which sailed over his head and into the back of the net to make it 2-1.

Six minutes later Dick scored again from nearly the same spot to make it 3-1 and the Colts had all they would need.

The Cougars threatened in the 77th minute when they were awarded a free kick about 30 yards to the right of the Colt goal. Junior Matthew Haycraft took the shot and hit the lower right side of the goal where Elken got his head on the ball and sent it off the right upright and out.

The Cougars had a corner kick in the last minute or so, but the shot went across the front of the Colt goal and out the other side.
