The Cougar soccer team took a 4-0 shutout victory on Saturday over the visiting Monroe County Falcons in a game shortened by the sweltering heat in the second half.

The game was even through the first 20 minutes of play, but in the 24th minute the Cougars broke through for a goal when senior Wyatt Schultz took a pass from senior Kyler Goostree on the left side and beat Falcon goal keeper Jarius Glover with a crossing shot into the right corner of the net.

Ten minutes later, the Cougars were again applying pressure on the Falcon goal. Bahaa Masri put a shot off the crossbar that bounded right to Goostree about five yards out in front of the goal. Goostree’s rebound shot was turned away by Glover, but the ball caromed right to Schultz, who headed the ball home for a 2-0 lead, which is how the first half ended.

Schultz went out to the center of the field to start the second half, but was pulled back by head coach Kenny Fukuhara. Schultz then spent the rest of the game with an ice pack on his upper thigh.

Five minutes into the second half., Goostree took the ball deep down the left side of the field, wheeled around and sent a shot on a very shallow angle the just caught the right side of the goal for a 3-0 lead.

Goostree was involved in the Cougars’ final score when he sent a centering pass to senior Logan Raymer who sent it home to make it 4-0.

The two teams took a hydration break at the 60th minute, and less than five minutes later the officials called the game because the heat index had climbed into the danger zone.
