A Webster County man has died in an underground mine accident near Madisonville.

On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 2:45, Jeremy Elder, 39 of Providence, was found unresponsive after being pinned beneath a battery-powered scoop at Cardinal Mine, according to Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet Director of Communications John A. Mura.

Elder was carried to the surface by coworkers. He was pronounced dead at about 4:45 Wednesday afternoon.

The accident is under investigation by the Division of Mine Safety.

This marks the second mining death in six weeks in western Kentucky — On July 31, a worker was killed at Paradise Mine #9 in Muhlenberg County after falling nearly 300 feet after an explosion.

Elder’s death is the fourth coal miner death in Kentucky this year.
